The Calgary Holistic Death Network’s November Guest Presentation
Join Jennifer to hear about the progressive and holistic practices of meeting death in The Netherlands. Funeral guides, who help families vigil and care for the bodies of their dead at home, are common, and the practices around death and bodies are normalized and non-institutional.
Jennifer will share photos and the story of her mother-in-law’s death, and how the family was supported to care for her body. The experience was grace-filled and healing, especially for Jen’s young children in their first experience with death.
Inspired by the experience of family-led body care, Jennifer has returned to the Netherlands three times to apprentice with funeral guides there. She will discuss the practices and models they use, including how they work collaboratively with crematories and funeral homes.
Jennifer is a death doula and has trained with a funeral guide in Nijmegen in The Netherlands. She now has experience working with Dutch families from the time a death occurs, caring for the body, and handling the majority of funeral arrangements. Jennifer was deeply moved by her experiences and training, and is working towards offering families a similar experience in Calgary.
