Officiating Funerals

November 18th, 2016

Learn to guide a community through a truly healing funeral or memorial ceremony.

Funerals are pragmatic rituals and they serve a very real purpose. When they’re done right, they bring healing to both the living and the dead. When they are the mark, they can feel hollow and meaningless, or proselytizing and inappropriate.

A funeral is a highly choreographed process, in which the community comes together for healing and solace, the family is supported and validated in their loss, and the person who has died is sent off on their journey.

Topics covered include:

  • The foundations of funeral design: adapting the core components to suit each family
  • Pre-funeral rituals for the family: preparing them for what the funeral can offer, and bringing their voices into the ceremony
  • The art of the eulogy: gathering and compiling the words the group needs to hear when someone they love has died
  • Public prayer: invoking the sacred in an inclusive, and non-dogmatic way
  • The order of service: coordinating speakers, musicians, and other participants
  • Practical considerations: logistical tips for helping the event run smoothly
  • Working with a team: skills for coordinating with funeral directors, venue managers and others

The most healing rituals are ones in which the participants feel involved and engaged. Because funerals are generally larger ceremonies, finding ways to facilitate that engagement is both more difficult, and also more important. This workshop will give you the skills to plan, coordinate, and officiate all aspects of a meaningful ceremony.
